White Oak Lichen was captured just steps from home, on the trunk of a massive white oak that had stood in our neighbor’s yard for over 100 years. This tree had weathered it all—tornadoes, lightning strikes, seasons upon seasons—and still stood tall. Until one day, it didn’t. When it finally fell, I walked over to pay my respects... and that’s when I saw it.
An entire side of the tree was blanketed in the most beautiful, vibrant lichen I’d ever seen. Rust-orange and soft minty teal, layered in intricate patterns like brushstrokes across the bark. It was nature’s way of reclaiming the tree—quietly, artfully, without fanfare. I knew instantly I had to photograph it.
