TA Moulton Barn – An American Landmark Framed by the Tetons

Set against the dramatic backdrop of Grand Teton National Park, the TA Moulton Barn stands as one of the most photographed barns in America—and for good reason. With weathered wood, a rugged spirit, and the Tetons towering behind it, this barn is a beautiful blend of nature, history, and human resilience. It’s a place that stops you in your tracks.

This blog is a quick travel guide for anyone visiting the Mormon Row Historic District, hoping to capture that perfect shot—or simply experience the stillness and strength this place radiates.

📍 Where Is the TA Moulton Barn?

The TA Moulton Barn is located along Mormon Row, just inside the southeast corner of Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming. To get there, turn onto Antelope Flats Road from Highway 191/26/89. You'll drive a few scenic miles before spotting the barns ahead—first the John Moulton Barn on your left, and then the TA Moulton Barn on your right.

How to get to TA Moulton Barn: From Jackson, WY, head north on US-191 for about 13 miles. Turn right onto Antelope Flats Road and follow signs for Mormon Row. A small parking lot is located near the barns. For navigation, search “TA Moulton Barn” in Google Maps or use this Grand Teton National Park map.

🕰️ A Quick Look at TA Moulton Barn History

The barn was built by Thomas Alma Moulton in the early 1900s. It took him and his family over 30 years to complete while they lived and farmed along Mormon Row. The barn has since become a symbol of the pioneering spirit and a widely recognized landmark of the American West.

Want to go deeper into the family story? The Jackson Hole Historical Society shares more about the Moulton family homesteads. Also, MormonRow.com—run by TA Moulton’s grandson, Jerry Moulton—offers a rich collection of stories and historic images.

📸 Why Is the TA Moulton Barn Famous?

Its popularity comes from a perfect trifecta: the barn’s rustic charm, the wide-open plains, and the snow-capped Grand Tetons rising behind it. It's a favorite subject for photographers, wedding shoots, and anyone visiting Grand Teton National Park. Whether you’re a pro with a DSLR or just snapping phone pics, it’s hard to take a bad photo here.

🕖 When to Visit Mormon Row for the Best Light

If you’re planning your own TA Moulton Barn photo adventure, the best time to visit is **early morning**. Sunrise hits the Tetons beautifully, casting warm light across the barn and fields. Crowds tend to arrive mid-morning, so arriving early gives you better shots—and a bit of quiet to enjoy the moment.

Cloudy days can add drama to your photos. But if you’re after that classic postcard look, aim for a clear morning with direct sun on the peaks.

🚗 What to Expect at the Barn

Parking is limited—a small dirt lot nearby holds about 8–10 cars. From there, a short trail leads to the barn. Expect a bit of dust, occasional ground squirrel holes, and other photo-seekers lining up to get “the shot.” It’s busy but respectful. Most visitors are more than willing to wait their turn or step aside for others.

Tip: For the best view, head slightly to the left side of the barn near the trees. That angle shows off the full structure with the Tetons in the background—exactly what makes this image so iconic.

💬 My Favorite Part

Honestly, just standing there. There’s a stillness to the air, a presence you feel when you pause and take it in—the history, the grit, the generations of hard work the barn represents. And beyond it, the Tetons, quiet and strong, as if they’re guarding the story. I think that’s what draws so many people here. It’s not just about the photo. It’s about the feeling.

As a fine art photographer, I always try to capture *that*—the experience of a place. My TA Moulton Barn fine art piece is my attempt to bring that moment home.

Thanks, Jerry, for sharing that! I’ve updated my blog and added a link to your site. Thank you to your family for sharing the history and beautiful barns (and view) – for all of us to enjoy. Mormon Row was a definite highlight of my trip to the Grand Tetons!

My Grandfather was TA Moulton. Known to family and friends as Alma. I was born here. The last Moulton to be born on Mormon Row. We moved off the property and turned it over to the Park Service in November of 1961. For more photos and history, check my website at https://mormonrow.com
